On the morning of December 11^th, Lei Chaozi, director of the Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Education, came to Lanzhou University with his fellows to investigate and guide the scientific and technological innovation work of Lanzhou University. He made a counseling report titled "Science and Technology Innovation and ‘Double First-Class’ Construction", and held a discussion in terms of school's scientific research and the construction of cutting-edge science centers. Yuan Zhanting, Secretary of the Party Committee of LZU, Yan Chunhua, president of LZU, Guo Qi, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of LZU, Pan Baotian, vice-president of LZU, Li Yumin, vice-president of LZU, Wang Rui, assistant principal of LZU, and An Baosheng, vice director of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the meeting. Heads of colleges, research institutes and key research bases, academic backbone representatives, and leaders at a department level were also present. Yan Chunhua was the host of this meeting.

In his report, Lei Chaozi pointed out that high-level scientific and technological innovation was a distinctive feature of first-class universities. It was also a critical base for first-class subjects and a fundamental guarantee to nurture first-class talents. To build a world-class university, we must focus on "four first-classes": making first-class achievements, cultivating first-class masters, nurturing first-class talents, and building first-class disciplines. Innovation was in line with the national fortune, and talents were connected to the nation. Science and education were of critical importance to build a socialist modernization power. As the main force of scientific and technological innovation, colleges and universities should focus on national strategy and frontier of science and technology, strengthen cross-disciplinary integration, set up first-class teams, carry out collaborative research, strive to achieve breakthroughs in forward-looking basic research and leading original achievements, and make great contributions to the construction of a socialist modernization power.

He hoped that the school could have an accurate grasp of the special position of scientific and technological innovation in the construction of "double first-class", profoundly understand the spirit of the undergraduate education conference of the national colleges in the new era, and do a good job in top-level design and organization around scientific and technological innovation work. He also mentioned that we should consolidate the direction, be committed to strengthening distinctive characteristics and make continuous efforts to improve our capabilities of scientific and technological innovation, and in the end build a world-class university as soon as possible. During the discussion, he fully affirmed the achievements of LZU’s scientific research in recent years, and gave guiding advice on the construction of cutting-edge science centers.

Yan Chunhua expressed his gratitude to Lei Chaozi for his investigation and guidance. He extended his thanks to the Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Education for its long-term concern and support for the development and construction of Lanzhou University. Based on the "double first-class" construction, he introduced the layout and development of LZU’s discipline, the country's major strategic docking, the adjustment of scientific research policy, and the construction of cutting-edge science centers. He said that LZU will, in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education, focus on talent cultivation, support scientific research, deepen comprehensive reforms, promote double first-class construction, and make greater contributions to innovative state construction and regional economic and social development.

At the meeting, Li Yumin introduced the status and development plan of the LZU’s scientific research work. Professor Huang Jianping made a report on the construction of the LZU’s cutting-edge science center.
